OBERHEIM OBX

Eight voice polyphonic and programable analog synthesizer. Each voice have 2VCO, 1VCF, 1VCA, 1LFO & 2ENV. My machine has been upgraded with Encore Electronics MIDI kit. This new board gives your synth 120 memories to store your sounds and control over various synth functions with MIDI controllers. The OBX was one of the first programmable and polyphonic synthesizers and was released in mid 1979. The list price for an eight voice machine was a scary $5995. I bought mine used in 1992.

The OB sound is very fat and alive. The 12db filter is great sounding and the string and pad sounds are excellent. Fat and tight bass sounds do not come easy out of this instrument however. One nice feature is that every voice can be panned with potentiometers inside the instrument. This makes string and pad sounds even better. The normal "moog" type mod and pitch wheels are replaced by two unique levers on the OBX. I think these levers are better and easier to use than the wheels on most other synths.

Advantages

+ Very fat and full electronic sound
+ Stable analog oscillators
+ Encore midi kit gives it modern properties
+ Wooden end caps and a real "retrolook"

Disadvantages

- Large and heavy
- Bad keyboard
- Somewhat noisy
- No headphone socket
