NOVATION NOVA II

The Novation Nova II is a 12, 24 or 36 voice digital (modelled virtual analog) synthesizer manufactured in 2001. I bought this instrument to have a light, portable and stable synth. Each voice has 3 oscillators, 2LFO, 3ENV and a multimode filter. The most anvanced feature for its time were the multitimbral effects. Each part could have is own independent chorus, reverb etc. The nova's four octave keyboard have a nornal synth action with velocity and channel aftertouch. Novation nova II and it's larger brother, the supernova II, are both a good buy today as the second hand prices are relatively low.

The novation sound has a smooth and silky character (the factory 303 emulating presets are quite unconvincing) which I like. When I were to buy a VA synth, I found the nova sound more pleasing than the sharper and harder sound of main competitors like the nord and the virus. Today more advanced virtual analogs has caught up with and eclipsed the nova.

Advantages

+ Good keyboard with velocity och aftertouch
+ 24 voice polyphonic and 6 part multitimbral
+ Three separate stereo outputs
+ Nice multitimbral effects

Disadvantages

- The sound is thinner than a real analog synth
- The signal path is easy to saturate
- More advanced VA synths now exist
