ROLAND JX-3P

Polyphonic 6 voice programable analog synthesizer manufactured by Roland in 1983-84. Each voice have 2DCO, 1VCF, 1VCA, 1LFO, 1ENV and a chorus unit. The synth stores 32 sound of your own creation and 32 presets which cannot be overwritten. JX-3P was my second synth and I expected it to sound like the Juno models when I bought it. It doesn't! Even if the JX is capable to create much more sophisticated sounds, it lacks the weight of the Juno. JX-3P was one of the first instruments to feature a MIDI interface and the implementation is very basic. An optional programmer were also available.

The JX-3P can create fantastic synthesized string and organ sounds. It can produce brittle and almost shimmering sounds which can be beautiful. The bass sounds are thin (as there is a high pass filter in there somewhere). A simple sequencer is included but the nice Juno arpeggiator has gone missing in action. The JX-3P lacks the normal analog style knobs and sliders which can make the programming tiresome.

Advantages

+ Great strings and organ sounds
+ Decent keyboard
+ Stable oscillators (DCO)
+ Reasonable second hand prices

Disadvantages

- Can sound a bit thin
- Few knobs and buttons
- External and optional programmer
- Primitive MIDI implementation
